How often should I tune my piano?
Most piano makers recommend that a new piano be tuned four times in the first year, and then twice a year after that. Pianos should be tuned at least once a year.
If you neglect tuning your piano for several years, it can take several tunings (a month or two apart) to get the piano to stay in tune for an extended period. Piano strings are under enormous tension (around 38,000 lbs. of pressure) and the piano framework “settles in” to handle the pressure.
Over time, the framework relaxes, responding to temperature and humidity changes, and the piano goes out of tune. If the framework relaxes too much, it doesn’t “remember” where it was and has to be reconditioned to hold the string pressure.
